This national initiative is conducted every October with a different fire safety emphasis each year. This year, we'll be spreading the word that more fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home—and we'll help teach people how to keep cooking fires from starting in the first place. Members of the White Plains Fire Department will be meeting with local school children this week instructing them on this important topic.
White Plains has some of the largest high-rise buildings situated between New York City and Albany. People live and/or work daily in these buildings. Did you know that the Fire Code of New York State requires that an approved fire safety and evacuation plan shall be prepared and maintained in all high rise buildings? The code also requires that all commercial high rise occupants be familiar with the plan and participate in fire evacuation drills.
